An ecological network is a system of mutually connected or spatially close ecologically significant areas that substantially contribute to the conservation of natural balance and biodiversity with their balanced biogeographical distribution. The Birds Directive and the Habitats Directive are regulations that set nature conservation standards for all EU Member States. Donji Kamenjak, Medulinski zaljev, Pomerski zaljev and the cave Špilja na Gradini are sites in the Municipality of Medulin that are protected under the Habitats Directive, while Akvatorij zapadne Istre is a site protected under both directives.
