Often overshadowed by plant and animal life, fungi represent a keystone of life due to their association with plant life. Up until now, 97 different species of mushrooms have been recorded, of which a quarter is considered rare in Croatia. Many of those are also very delicious. Further research into the subterranean fungi species shows great promise, even for finding species completely new to science.
